Conquer By Having A Changed Heart

Bound for Conquest Series, Part 1
Sunday 12th February 2006

'Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'
1 Samuel 16:7

God wants people to succeed in life. Jesus said: ‘I have come that you might have life, life in all its fullness.’ Christ promised his disciples, that no matter what they faced in life, He would give them the power to overcome.

He recognised that there were evil powers in the world but he stated in Luke 10:19, 'I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.'

King David was one of the great conquerors in the Bible and he reproduced conquerors - he had 30 outstanding or ‘mighty men’ close to him and he formed a very assorted group of characters into a victorious army.

Right from the start he knew that the most important issue was what was the condition of his own heart. 1 Samuel 13:14; ‘The Lord sought out a man after his own heart.’

Before he was chosen as King we see in 1 Samuel 16:7 that 'Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'

Our world today is seduced by illusions. Make-up and makeovers are all important. Image is everything. But it is not reality. Magazines airbrush and digitally enhance pictures. Cosmetic surgery is booming.

People make look good but inside there’s a lot of bad. They may appear to be rich but in reality they feel they have little or nothing of value. They may look confident but inwardly be tormented by self-doubt. They may smile sweetly but privately be consumed by bitterness.

This is why Christianity focuses on root issues in our lives. Men and women maybe fixated on the outward but 'God looks at the heart.’

See:
Matthew 15:17-20
Jeremiah 17:9-10

What’s going on in your heart is all-important. Deuteronomy 10:12-13

To become a Christian means that there must be faith in your heart that you express with your lips, Romans 10:9-10.

If God’s people are to move forward and build together there must be heart commitment. Nehemiah 4:6

To live as a Christian there must be a heart to heart relationship with god. Proverbs 3:5, ‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.’

1. You Need A Clean Heart

The Bible makes clear how dark and dirty the human heart can be. Hosea 5:4 'A spirit of prostitution is in their heart; they do not acknowledge the LORD.'

God calls for far more than an outward morality but an inward reality of holiness. Matthew 5:27-28. Just as sexual uncleanness can clog up your heart, so can the pull of money, Matthew 6:20-22:20.

Matthew 5:8, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.’
Psalm 24:3-5, 'Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?'

David knew how important it was to be clean. After committing adultery and having Bathsheba’s husband put to death, he prayed, ‘Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me,’ Psalm 51:10.

God wants to bring his light to our lives and that means getting rid of the darkness in our hearts. The only way that can happen is when we come to the Cross for it is only the blood of Jesus that cleanses from sin.

2. You Need A Healed Heart

Many people have wounded hearts. It is as if someone has shot arrows right into your heart and you can’t get rid of them.

You may have been wounded by a betrayal, someone you trusted let you down badly, maybe a family member, a friend or business partner. Maybe you have been wounded by the loss of a loved one or by bitter words or experiences.

You look like you are fine, but your pain makes it hard for you to move forward in life. For you to be a conqueror you have to be healed.

Our role in our own healing
This seems a strange point to talk about when we are the ones who have been hurt. But there are times when our response is key to our own healing.

Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there a bitterness that is holding you back? You need to realize just as God has loved you unconditionally and forgiven you your sins, so He wants us to touch us with His love so that we can unconditionally forgive others.

God’s role in our healing
God is the great and ultimate healer:
Psalm 34:18
Psalm 147:3 - 'He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.'
Psalm 51:17 - 'The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.'
Isaiah 61:1 Jesus came to bring healing at all levels - physical, spiritual and emotional.

Healing is a process and the more we open up to the Holy Spirit the more we will receive healing.

3. You Need A Humbled Heart

Proverbs 16:5, 'The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.'

Deuteronomy 8:12-15 warns the Israelites about the dangers of material blessing making people proud.

In Daniel 4:24-37 the seemingly all-powerful ruler of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar, experienced a dramatic humbling by God.

James 4:6 says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’
2 Chronicles 32:24
Isaiah 57:15

To conquer in life you have to have a humble heart, not a proud heart. You have to stop being so sure you are always right and start to listen.

You have to appreciate that, while you may have worked hard to achieve what you have, it is God who has given you breath and ability to do so. You have to learn that if you are going to know God then He, not you, is God.

4. You Need A Generous Heart

At heart are you stingy? Is your first reaction to count the cost and give only with reluctance? Deuteronomy 15:9-11 speaks about being generous to the poor by canceling their debts.
In the early church they had generous and open hearts. Acts 4:32-34, All the believers were one in heart and mind…

How much does your heart need to change in respect of generosity? Well to be a conqueror that knows the blessing of God you need a generous heart, as well as a clean heart, a healed heart, and a humble heart. At root it comes down to this….

5. You Need A Tender Heart

Too many people in our world today have become hard hearted - towards God and others including their own flesh and blood.

Exodus refers repeatedly to Pharaoh’s hard heart, Exodus 7:13-19.

Probably we can all think of people who have shown that they have hard and calloused hearts and Christians are not immune from this condition.

Coming To A New Place Of Conquest

To come to a new place of conquest in our lives as individuals, families, a church and nation there has got to come a great change of heart.

For some that involves real repentance, saying sorry to God and others for how you have been.

Joel 2:12, "Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."

For others there is so much pain that you just need God to pour out His love and work and miracle of change in your heart.

Ezekiel 11:19-20, 'I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.'

Let us pray like David:
‘Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.’
Psalm 139:23-24

Coretta Scott King, 1927-2006

Coretta Scott King was the widow of Martin Luther King Jr, the civil rights leader assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4 1968, and later became a public figure in her own right.

At the funeral in Atlanta on April 10, she asked that a tape recording of one of King's sermons should be played. According to one observer, as King's voice filled the church his widow "sat with her face a mask of controlled grief".

Christians Persecuted...in England

'While Christians who turn to Islam are feted, the 200,000 Muslims who turn away are faced with abuse, violence and even murder...The problem isn’t so much what Mr Hussein, whose parents came from Pakistan, believes, but what he doesn’t believe. Born into Islam, he converted eight years ago to Christianity, and his wife, also from Pakistan, followed suit.

While those who convert to Islam, such as Cat Stevens, Jemima Khan, and the sons of the Frank Dobson, the former Health Secretary, and Lord Birt, the former BBC Director-General, can publicly celebrate their new religion, those whose faith goes in the other direction face persecution. Mr Hussein, a 39-year-old hospital nurse in Bradford, is one of a growing number of former Muslims in Britain who face not just being shunned by family and community, but attacked, kidnapped, and in some cases killed.

12 Keys To Conquer

As Christians, leaders and churches we are not hoping to conquer but we are BOUND FOR CONQUEST. This is God’s intention for each one. We are called to be conquerors to triumph over everything thing that stands against us.

In Bogotá there is no doubt that they have learnt to overcome in their nation where they have faced great difficulty and been the means of great transformation.

From the Colombian ‘Bound for Conquest’ Convention we have many lessons on how to conquer.

You Conquer…

1. By Being A Person Of Vision And Dreams

‘God has multitudes for your church.’ Believe for an anointing of 1000.

2. By Faith

‘Goals are a declaration of faith. Faith always has a risk. Don’t limit God with your mind. God wants to lead you to a new level.’

In September 2005 Pastor Castellanos, challenged the men who would be in his Senior 12 to believe, pray and work to get 1000 men on the School of leaders within three months. This was achieved. The faith goal set for 2006 is that they will each have a cell of 12 over the next year = 144,000 men.

Pastor Barrios referred to a strategy based on Number 31:4 where all the tribes recruited 1000 men to overcome the Midianites who had attacked and robbed them.

'It wasn’t one tribe that had 500 and another 800 they all had 1000.’

Everybody should have faith for what God can do through them. Faith is simply believing the word of God.

3. By Faithfulness

According to Pastor Castellanos, ‘The most important thing in a disciple is not fruitfulness but faithfulness. We have had disciples who were fruitful but not faithful and lost their fruit through unfaithfulness.’

4. By Breaking Free From Sin And Negativism

You must get rid of everything that would stop you becoming fruitful as a Christian. ‘Don’t allow resentment in your heart. Fight against fear, rebellion, pride, and sexual uncleanness. God has given you power to overcome all stumbling blocks. Take your ‘vengeance’ against anything that holds you back and takes your fruit.’

Overcome obstacles of envy, fear, discouragement, independence and selfishness and murmuring or critical words and attitudes. ‘Murmuring can be passive; where you say nothing but listen or active when you do both.’

The antidote is to be positive and have a grateful heart.

5. By Love

‘When you are called to win those who are lost there must be compassion. Modern society has fallen into hardness of heart. We must ask God for compassion. This is why Christ left heaven. Why do you want people if you have no compassion for people and can’t help them?’

'When compassion comes to you, you can believe for the redemption of your nation.’
Cesar Castellanos

‘Your disciple is a friend - always treat people with love and respect. Avoid criticism. Be an expert in looking for the good in others and not condemning.’
Joanna Castellanos

6. By Maturity Of Commitment

Three signs of a mature Christian are:

Fasting: where people get serious with God and fast as well as pray.
Tithing: where people have committed their finances to God and to the church.
Serving: where people don’t just think of what’s just best for themselves but where people give themselves to help and serve others.

When someone has a selfish heart they don’t see the whole picture and they become independent. When they are truly a son or daughter they work for the good of the whole family.

7. By Taking Responsibility For Your: Nation, Politically And Spiritually

Three of the church’s leaders are standing in the Colombian national elections, including Pastor Claudia Castellanos who is running for the senate.

Senator German Vargas Lleras, the leader of Radical Change, the third largest political party, and a potential future candidate for President, spoke at the conference and pledged to ‘accept the challenge of facing change with the help of the Christian community.’ He pledged to commit to all of the goals of the Christian agenda for family, national security and the eradication of poverty.

‘G12 has anointing not just for making disciples but for government.’
Claudia Castellanos

8. By Taking Hold Of God’s Word And Applying It To Our Lives

Reading the Bible and writing down what God says to you each day is of great importance.

‘I am living on my own and to prepare yourself, you have to pay a price. You have to move to move to a new level. This is a year of challenges and a year to conquer. Take hold of the Word and head out to conquer.’
Manuela Castellanos

9. By Knowing God As Our Father

‘G12 is a powerful vision because it deals with the issue of fatherhood.’
Claudia Castellanos

Abraham is our father in the faith and we are to know God as a loving heavenly father.

‘G12 is a vision of being fathers to the nations in a fatherless generation. Many have been hurt by father figures. God is restoring the spirit of fatherhood. We should learn to love our spiritual fathers.’
Lawrence Khong

10. By The Anointing Of The Holy Spirit

God gives an anointing to rebuke demons and bring healing. There is power in having an encounter with God.

11. By Going Taking The Gospel To People Wherever They Are

Pastor Estaban Chavez gave a Biblical overview of the importance of visiting people in their homes called ‘The Power Of A Visit.’ ‘If you have love, go beyond the door posts of people’s homes and be with people. The apostle Paul loved visiting because he loved the people he was visiting. Just as Jesus did we must sacrifice our comfort out of love.’ Visitation is one of the keys of consolidating people in their faith.

12. By Having A Changed Heart

Pastor Juan Carlos Rojas, head of the School of Leaders, told how he had changed his group of three times in five years and never grew beyond 20 cells. Then the Lord said, ‘I have to form your heart before you can form others.’ He spoke of how the Lord dealt with his own heart about being faithful, more loving and having more faith. In one year he went from 20 to 200 cells.

‘God had to get through to my own hard heart. Because of things I had experienced as a policeman I had hardened myself just to get through. Like many men I had to learn how to cry.’ Ken Gott

Conquer Today

No matter what is happening in the world, no matter what circumstances you face with Christ in your life, you can Conquer. The biggest battles always precede the biggest victories. Now is the time for breakthrough. It is important to believe and call on the Lord for a new level of faith, confidence, provision, freedom and security. According to Romans 8:31 ‘If God is for us who can be against us?’

‘Now in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels no demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither heights no depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’
Romans 8:37-39

Bound For Conquest

11th MCI Annual Conference, Bogotá, Colombia, 23rd-28th January

MCI Church, one of the world’s largest, hosted their 11th Annual Convention in Bogotá, Colombia. The theme of the conference was ‘Rumbo a la Conquista’ or Bound for Conquest.

Over 1200 delegates gathered from around the world to meet with the 20,000 Colombians at El Campin Coliseum. Among them were many delegations from Latin America, including a church in Lima, Peru which has recently grown to 70,000 members and is expected to double in number by the end of the year.

Lawrence Khong, pastor of Singapore’s large Faith Community Baptist Church and a magician, told of the many doors that were opening in Asia and particularly China, including contacts at a high level of government.

The UK delegation included the leader of a Hispanic church in London which has grown from 60 to 3,000 in recent years. Pastor Ken Gott from Metro Church International, Sunderland also attended.

This was my fourth Convention in Colombia. My first in 2003, came six months after my wife’s funeral and brought great healing and direction to me and my family.

It was very evident that Bogotá was a much safer place (security was more low key) and that the church had moved to a new level of blessing and influence.

The teaching by the Senior 12 leaders, both men and woman, was of a very high biblical standard and the worship and friendship was characterised by a very strong sense of God’s presence.

In a country that has known so much spiritual darkness, with drug related killings, kidnappings and terrorism, the light of the gospel is shining brightly.

One of the leading female pastors, Jeanette Barrios, said, ‘the heavens are open over Mision Carismatica as never before and upon the churches here.’

Certainly we received a spiritual impartation and learnt much from the visit.

Religious Hatred Bill

From the Christian Institute:

“O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.”
2 Chronicles 20:6

God’s sovereignty

The result on Tuesday was extraordinary and historic. In order to keep the excellent Lords amendments it was necessary to win two votes. If we had lost either one of the two votes, the ping-pong procedure between the two Houses of Parliament would have continued. The first vote was won with a majority of ten. The second was won by a single vote! The Prime Minister himself left after the first vote having been told there was no point staying. There have also been reports that during the proceedings a small number of MPs who backed the Lords amendments accidentally voted with the Government on the second vote. If true, such confusion would be understandable. The Government used a timetable motion which changed the order of the votes.

Political journalists have spent much time trying to come up with an explanation as to how the Government lost the vote on Tuesday. But as things come to light, it is becoming easier to see how the vote was lost. All of the circumstances, including the personal role of the Prime Minister, are a poignant reminder of God’s sovereignty. As Christians we thank God for his great mercy for this victory. As a nation we do not deserve it. If ever there was a vote for Christians to win, this was it. We do rejoice and thank God for answering our prayers.

Human responsibility

As well as prayer, God also expects us to act. I do not believe that the Lord would have answered our prayers if we had neglected the importance of action. As Spurgeon pointed out, we should pray as if it all depends upon God and act as if it all depends on us.

The campaign against the religious hatred law involved the biggest mobilisation of Christians there has been for a generation. A wide range of Christian organisations worked very hard to protect religious liberty. At The Christian Institute it was by far and away the biggest campaign we have ever fought – with meetings all over the country, and large postage, travel and printing bills. If you would like to help us cover our costs then you can give on-line.

Click here to make a donation.

Simon Calvert, from the Christian Institute, was at Westminster talking to MPs right up until the debate started. Even at a late stage MPs changed their minds and said they would back the Lords amendments. Our friends at the Lawyers Christian Fellowship also reported the same thing.

From a human point of view I am absolutely certain that it was the lobbying by the individual Christians of their MPs which was the most decisive factor of all. Many supporters have told us how they went to see their MP in trepidation! Yet their courage has been honoured.

We will never know which conversation, letter or telephone call it was which convinced an MP to change his or her mind. It could have been yours! When we consider that the victory was won by a majority of only one, we see how vital every MP’s vote was. It all goes to show the great importance of Christian involvement. Let us not neglect our freedom, as has been done in years past. We must be watchful and prayerful.

What the Bill says

The Religious Hatred Bill will become law, but with the excellent Lords safeguards included. It is only possible to break the new law by using threatening words or behaviour with the intention of inciting hatred against a person because of their religious belief.

The Minister, Paul Goggins, told the House of Commons on 31 January that if the Lords amendments were passed “it would be virtually impossible to bring a successful prosecution.” (Hansard Column 190). Well now the Lords amendments have been passed, so according to the Government a successful prosecution would be virtually impossible! The Lords amendments have added the following free speech protection for the new religious hatred offence:

29J Protection of freedom of expression

Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system.

We have always opposed the Bill. There is a danger that it could be misused, although now that danger has been massively reduced. Our greatest concern is that legislation simply should not be made in this area. We can be very thankful indeed that Gospel freedom will not be put in jeopardy, as it so easily could have been by this Bill.

However, now that legislation has been made covering religion, there will be calls for “homophobic hatred” to be specifically outlawed. This is a concern because of a number of recent high profile cases where gay rights activists have sought to get the police to stop Christians speaking up about homosexuality.

Joe and Helen Roberts

You may remember that just before Christmas a Christian couple from Lancashire were interrogated by police because they complained to their local council over its gay rights policy. We have been involved in helping the couple, Joe and Helen Roberts, lodge an official complaint to the police and the council. We recently held a public meeting in Preston about the case. A recording of the meeting, which includes a statement from Joe Roberts, is available from our website.

To listen to Joe Roberts’ statement click here.

To listen to experienced barrister, Neil Addison, talk about the case click here.

To listen to the whole meeting click here.

If the Police do not accept that they were in the wrong, there is the possibility of legal action to seek redress in the courts.

Pray that
  • Joe and Helen may know God’s strength as they seek to take a stand against what the Police have done.
  • Lancashire Constabulary will apologise and say that no crime has been committed and that they should not have visited Joe and Helen.
  • The resolution of the case by whatever means will set a precedent to protect Christians
And finallyIt has been a very long campaign against the religious hatred law.

Thank you for all your prayers and support during that time.

Yours in Christ,

It’s Dark But A New Day Is Dawning! 22nd January

'Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.'
Isaiah 60:1-3

The immediate context of these verses is that after a dark period of judgement, exile and captivity of the Israelites, the prophet Isaiah foresaw a new day of restoration and blessing - They would come out of captivity. They would no longer be at the mercy of circumstances and oppressors. They would know God’s presence and power in a way that they had never before experienced or never could imagine.

There is a broader application however for the church of Christ. Isaiah’s vision is a vision of what God will do in the chosen people of God (comprised of all who accept Christ as Messiah), both in time and at the end of time.

What God is saying:

1. Your Light Has Come

The contrast between the state of the world and the state of the church will become ever more clear.

In Exodus 10:22-23 we read how a plague of darkness covered all Egypt.

Certainly today there is a great moral and spiritual darkness.

The Bible speak of people walking in darkness (Isaiah 9:2), men who love darkness (John 3:19), darkerned hearts (Romans 1:21), and understanding (Ephesians 4:18).

T S Elliot spoke of “An age, which advances progressively backwards.”

Victorian secularists expected the 20th Century to be a new age of enlightenment but turned into a century of some of the darkest episodes in the whole of history.

Two horrific world wars, the proliferation and use of atomic bombs, recurring genocide and devastating famines have shown what dark deeds humanity is capable of. 6 million Jews in the Holocaust, 60 to 100 million Russians dead through the murderous regime of Stalin.

Today we live in a world of international terrorism, racism, ethnic cleansing, urban and domestic violence, economic injustice and family break-up.

This is dark world in which we live, but for the Christian, the picture is very different…your light has come and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

Christ has come
Isaiah 9:6 - a child is born, for to us a son is given.
John 3:19 - light HAS come.
1 Peter 2:9 - God calls people out of darkness.
Isaiah 9:1 - no more gloom for those who are in distress.
Psalm 27:1 - the Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?

No matter what the circumstances are, we can know the Lord Himself illuminating our lives.

The Holy Spirit has come
The Lord asked the Father to send the Comforter to us to illuminate us and be alongside us. When the day of Pentecost came and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, their lives were lit up with love, joy and confidence.

No experience, robbed them of their joy and heavenly perspective.

The greatest need of the church is not new structures, strategies and striving to be relevant, but the Holy Spirit. When you know the Holy Spirit you are different and the world will see the difference.

A New Day of Glory has come
There are periods in the history of the church, usually when things at their most dark in the world, when the glory of the Lord is increasingly manifest.

In this church we need to recognise that the glory of the Lord is bringing in a new day of blessing and He intends that His glory will increasingly appears over us.

Don’t just wait and pray for a new day. Recognise that it is already here.

2. Your Future is Bright

You will affect nations
God’s heart is for the world-all people of all races in all nations. Already we are touching nations: Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso and South Africa.

You will attract rulers
When God works, people of influence and power are always drawn to what is taking place. In Colombia, President Uribe attends one of the cells of International Charismatic Church (MCI).

God’s rule attracts people of rule
You will see great growth with many spiritual sons and daughters from far and wide.
God gives growth. He causes the very least to see great growth.
Open your eyes to the possibilities. See what God is already doing.

You will be prospered financially
Isaiah 60:5-11
God is not strapped for cash. When He is at work you will see favour and provision.

You will overcome your enemies
Isaiah 60:12-14
Don’t be discouraged or lose focus because of people who are against you. Leave them for God to sort out. You’ll be amazed how he turns the tables.

You will be honoured
Isaiah 60:15-16

You will know God is with you
Isaiah 60:16
You will recognise the authority that you carry.

You will come to a new place of peace and healing
Isaiah 60:18-20
God is going to bring a new stability and tranquillity to your life.

You will possess your inheritance
Isaiah 60:21
Believe to see all that God has promised you.

You will see God work quickly
Isaiah 60:22
God is speeding things up. When it’s harvest time He moves quickly.

3. You Must Arise and Shine

'Arise, shine.’ The call here is to forsake passivity and rise up in your destiny. You have to get up from where you are and get hold of what God has for you and what He wants to do through you.

He’s saying ‘OK I am ready, now team up with me.’ You don’t have to stay in the darkness. You don’t have to be a captive to anything. It’s a new day for you, for your family and the church.

Don’t sit by thinking about it. Get up and embrace it.

Rise Up!
Rise up from you fear. Rise up from your failure. Rise up from your shame. Rise up from your family history. Rise up from your oppression. Rise up from your sorrow. Rise up and take your healing. Rise up and receive the blessing God has for you.

Draw near to Christ
You can draw near to Christ with a simple prayer of repentance – “God be merciful to me, I have ignored you and your ways, God come into my life and shine your light on me.”

Jesus Christ alone is the light of the world. He is YOUR greatest friend – YOUR hope and YOUR future!
